The second worst, lowest scoring team in the Western Conference is who the Pittsburgh Penguins will have to deal with.

Pittsburgh Penguins (20-17-4, 44 pts.) vs. Nashville Predators (17-19-3, 37 pts.)

Seems like an easy task, right?  Sounds like two points, eh?

If that’s the mentality the Penguins have we’ll likely see a repeat of the losses to Florida, Tampa Bay and Toronto.  One would have to expect, though, that those games and the recent losing skid have opened the players’ eyes to how important each and every game is.

Tonight marks the beginning of the second half of the season.  It is a clean slate and a race to the playoffs.  At 44 points and in ninth place in the Eastern Conference, the Penguins can overlook no team on the road to the post-season, that is, if they hope to be part of the party.

Four more years!

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced this morning that Jordan Staal has signed a four year contract that will keep him a Penguin through the 2012-2013 season.

Talk about a core in tact.

The new contract goes in to effect at the start of the 2009-10 season.  So far this season Staal has accumulated 21 points (11 G – 10 A) in 41 games.  For his career he has 91 points in 204 games.
